Joaquim Januário is a product designer whose practice is grounded in a thoughtful consideration of the social systems and traditions behind design.

His approach is shaped by the contrast between his roots, growing up immersed in the raw, resource-rich natural heritage, where traditional knowledge persists, and the complexities of urban life.

He seeks to explore how this dialogue between rural tradition and the contemporary world can inform his methodology.

Agostinho Stool

The name “Agostinho” pays homage to the Portuguese thinker Agostinho da Silva. Design as a cultural expression in which production is not a distant process. The concept is one of closeness and connection. The craftsman is regarded as a specialist who understands the material at a high level that can only be achieved through years of experience. The design continues to evolve right up until the project’s completion. A dialogue between the designer, the craftsman and the new means of production. The key feature of the bench is the four connecting pieces linking the legs to the seat supports, which provide the necessary structure. The shape of these pieces derives from the circular form of the bench, divided into ‘quarters’.
