Joaquim Januário is a product designer whose practice is grounded in a thoughtful consideration of the social systems and traditions behind design.

His approach is shaped by the contrast between his roots, growing up immersed in the raw, resource-rich natural heritage, where traditional knowledge persists, and the complexities of urban life.

He seeks to explore how this dialogue between rural tradition and the contemporary world can inform his methodology.

Tangram

For the “Design a Prémio 2024” competition to design furniture for a shopping center, Tangram sofa is a modular object in expanded cork with four pieces that would adapt to the space it was in. It is an object that is used intensively and therefore required some care in its design. This care was ensured through a system that includes a piece of oak wood and a hole where a screw is inserted to secure the wood to the cork.
