Joaquim Januário is a product designer whose practice is grounded in a thoughtful consideration of the social systems and traditions behind design.

His approach is shaped by the contrast between his roots, growing up immersed in the raw, resource-rich natural heritage, where traditional knowledge persists, and the complexities of urban life.

He seeks to explore how this dialogue between rural tradition and the contemporary world can inform his methodology.

Coexistence

In his 1964 “Smoke” collection, Joe Colombo designed a set of crystal glasses conceived to mix different pleasures in a single gesture. The asymmetrical foot guaranteed a grip while enjoying a cigar or a cigarette. Glasses that amplify the concept of co-existence; two experiences that can be had simultaneously. In “The Life of Forms”, Vilém Flusser portrays these objects as something associated with rituals and culture.

A reading reinterpreted in this minimalist set called “Co-Existence”, produced in blown glass in Marinha Grande. Benefiting from the knowledge accumulated in this part of Portugal in the art of working with glass. Both pieces contemplate the complementarity that enhances the ritual of enjoying a drink. The result is a set that not only serves a functional purpose but also embodies the timeless beauty of blown glass.
