Joaquim Januário is a product designer whose practice is grounded in a thoughtful consideration of the social systems and traditions behind design.

His approach is shaped by the contrast between his roots, growing up immersed in the raw, resource-rich natural heritage, where traditional knowledge persists, and the complexities of urban life.

He seeks to explore how this dialogue between rural tradition and the contemporary world can inform his methodology.

Testemunho

Travelling through Portugal with the stones that make it up! This was the concept behind the StonebyPORTUGAL Awards trophy promoted by Assimagra, symbolically represented in the form of a geological testimony. A core, also known as a “tarolo” or “carote”, is the name given to a sample obtained by drilling a rotary probe into the ground of a quarry. Searching through the stone waste, we found the diversity of colour, variety and quality of the country’s stones and arrived at the final form of this piece, where each meticulously fitted layer represents not only a depth but also a geological moment. This project was done in conjunction with my design partner Rodrigo Duarte and the OLIVAH brand.
